SS Miss Belmar

How did I get to building the SS Miss Belmar?

Back in the late 70’s early 80’s I lived in Edison and our family had a house in South Belmar. In the late 70’s I was going to Middlesex County College and was about 21 at this time. After MCC I went to DeVry Technical Institute. Between college and working at a boat yard I would spend as much time as I could in South Belmar. What was there? The beach, ocean, nice weather, the marina in Shark River, and boats! On the map our house was at the yellow arrow. I would ride my bike along the lake, down to the beach along Ocean Avenue then along the road leading inland to the marina. Our family kept our boat at the Belmar Marina about where the orange arrow is. The SS Miss Belmar was docked about where the white arrow is. Hanging out at the marina I somehow became friends with Bob Nash, the guy smiling in the next picture. He was usually the day captain of the Miss Belmar. By this time I had scratch built a sailboat, the Bismarck and the Carrier. I wanted to build the SS Miss Belmar as my next project! Talking to Bob he had the builders plans of the boat. How convenient. The boat was built by Gulf Craft in Louisiana.

Old pictures...

Before I get to the plans, Bob also had a set of Polaroid pictures of the SSMB being built at Gulf Craft which I now have as I’m holding on to them. I don’t know who took them and who is in the pictures, but the boat was purchased by Al Shinn. He might be in a few pictures, and maybe his son David, but not sure. So here they are.

Gulf Craft plans...

Pretty cool pictures! Don’t you think? I do not recall what the scale of the plans were but I do know I had to rescale them to the size I wanted the model to be. I was going for 1/24th or 1/2 inch equals 1 foot. This gave me a model that was about 54″ long and 16″ wide.

More pictures...

Here are a few pictures taken by me, except for the first one. I took the other pictures from our boat or from land. You can see the impressive beam on the bow on picture. My pictures were taken sometime around 1980ish.

First version of the model...

This is the first version of the model. I don’t have many pictures of the first SSMB being built. It is plank on frame and the hull was fiberglassed with cloth and polyester resin. The cabin and pilot house are model aircraft grade plywood, also fiberglassed. The main deck and cabin deck have window screen impregnated with fiberglass which looks like diamond plate. You will see this on the second version of the model. The last four pictures are neat, she’s coming thru an inlet with jetties on either side, much like Shark River Inlet. This was at one of the shows our club, the Garden State Model Boaters put on.

Renovations mid 1980's...

In 1986 the boat went up to I think Staten Island for new paint and renovations. Bob and I went up there to check out the boat. It was impressive to walk around under the boat and see areas you usually don’t see.

Please proceed to page two which shows construction of the second version of the model.
